How do I recognize a winter tire?

Winter tires are easily recognized by the Alpine logo on the sidewall of the tire. The Alpine symbol consists of a mountain and a snowflake and is therefore unmistakable for identifying a tire as a winter tire.

Older winter tires are still marked with an M+S symbol. According to the ADAC, these may still be driven until Sept. 30, 2024, and are considered suitable for winter use until then – provided they were manufactured by Dec. 31, 2017. All winter tires produced from 2018 onwards must bear the Alpine logo.

What is the maximum time that winter tires can be used in the summer?

According to the law, there is no obligation in Germany to change winter tires in the summer, so you can theoretically (but really only theoretically!) drive this type of tire all year round. However, since the rubber compound of winter tires is designed for cold temperatures, driving winter tires in the summer entails major safety penalties.

If you drive winter tires in the summer, you have a significantly longer braking distance on hot asphalt than with suitable summer tires. A test conducted by the German automobile club ADAC showed that the higher the tread depth of the winter tires and the higher the ambient temperature, the longer the braking distance. In addition, driving stability deteriorates enormously, as grip on the road is simply not optimal with winter tires in summer.

Even if you want to save money and put on worn winter tires in the summer, you should refrain from doing so because of the increased risk of accidents. This bad compromise is absolutely no recommendation with regard to your safety. We will be happy to advise you on inexpensive summer tires, so that you no longer have to drive winter tires in the summer!

What is the minimum tread depth for winter tires?

The legally prescribed minimum tread depth for winter tires in Germany is 1.6 mm. For safety reasons, however, the ADAC recommends a minimum tread depth of 4 mm so that the tires can react safely to snow and ice as usual and provide the necessary grip for a shorter braking distance.

In addition to the winter tire tread depth, the age of the tires should not be ignored. After 6 years at the latest, winter tires should be replaced with new tires, as the rubber compound has become so hard that it can no longer react optimally to the cold temperatures. Winter tires that are too old can also pose a safety risk!

When should I start driving winter tires in Germany?

In principle, there is no obligation to drive with winter tires in Germany. Instead, the Road Traffic Regulations define a situational winter tire obligation (§ 2 (3a) StVo):

"The driver of a motor vehicle may only drive it in icy, slippery, slushy, icy or frosty conditions if all wheels are fitted with tires that meet the requirements of Section 36 (4) of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations, without prejudice to the general requirements for tires."

The well-known german rule of thumb "von Oktober bis Ostern (von O bis O)" (from October to Easter) is a reference for orientation for the next tire change, but has no legal basis. If the temperatures fall below 7 °C, you should only drive on the roads with winter tires.
